Kerala from the last phase of Indian freedom struggle and the post independence period became successful in surmounting the deficiency to social progress through a process of social intermediation. By social intermediation means, in the context of human development, interventions in the different levels of society by the reformers such as social as well as cultural activists, literarians, artists and political thinkers. The beginning of modern education in Kerala has been started with the famous proclamation of Rani Laxmi Bhai in 1817. In which they emphasized the need of universalistic as well as state sponsored education. The missionaries seized the opportunity to convert the downtrodden in Kerala and admitted poor children in heir schools associated with church. Thus, missionary schools filled the vacuum in the early development of educational reformation in Kerala.
The forces of social transformation strengthened Kerala to become an elite and intellectual society in India.
